Lost In The Woods/ Henricus Settlement / Richmond Area Photos

Past adventures. . .

I went out and took a bunch of photos for the newcomer’s guide I’m working on today.  It was overcast and drizzling but not really  raining until sometime after lunch.  So I went to several places and then drove down to the large state park in this area and started exploring.  The trees were looking very nice and I took some photos. And then at one point I left the path to take a photo and found another path.  I thought “this must curve around and rejoin the one I was on”.  Why did I think this? Good question.  So after walking for about an hour and taking lots of photos I gave up the idea that I was headed back to anywhere familiar and called 911.  The lady on the line was friendly and said she would call the park ranger.  Then after awhile he called and said he would come out and get me.

Cell phones are so cool.

While I was waiting this guy came out of the woods with a large gun hanging around his neck. He looked a little bit like a hobbit. Or maybe Rip Van Winkle. But he was friendly and we had a nice talk about deer, turkeys and people who get lost in the woods. After the park ranger showed up I decided to go back to the car and drive over to the James River and Henricus.  This is one of the first settlements in the new world.  It’s a small fort overlooking the James River that was established about four hundred years ago.

So I talked with another guy who also had a gun at Henricus.  Only his gun was a very old musket.  We had a very interesting discussion about life in the early days and then he showed me how he loaded and fired his gun. Beth is down in Charleston SC this weekend for a wedding so I probably would have just sat around the house if it wasn’t for photography.  Instead of doing that I met some interesting people, got a whole lot of exercise, had an adventure and fed my creative spirit. Here’s a photo of the guy in Henricus taking aim and firing his gun.

I went down to the James River last evening to try out the Nikon D40 that I purchased from Amazon a few days ago. It’s a smaller camera than the D70 (far less expensive too) and it has a superior LCD screen and setup options on the screen. Here is a photo I took with it. I also bought the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens. It does take better photos further away than anything I have used in the past. And it has a stabilization process that makes things clearer. I sent the D70 back to Nikon as well so it was a productive day. Hopefully they can awaken it from its coma and send it home again.

I still love you Nikon D70 wherever you are. Get well soon.

We are heading back to Virginia Beach this weekend and I hope to take a few better photos after learning from my experiences last weekend. Of course you can never tell what you are going to get down there. Things may be completely different and it will have nothing to do with my learning curve.

My learning curve sometimes seems more like a speed bump in the road.

I hope nobody is grossed out my the video of Craig Ferguson’s dream. Let me know if it bothers you. I find him to be extremely funny and Beth thinks I have lost my mind once again.

Amazon ads are making an appearance. It’s curiosity. Would anyone actually use them to make a buying decision?

I am skeptical. But I love Amazon and personally try to keep them in business by running the UPS guy up and down the road with packages.

Everyone have a great weekend. It’s the best time of year with the cool, dry weather and the beautiful fall colors coming soon. Or maybe they have already come to you. Bernie?

I know that Jeff is happily snapping photos up there in New Hampshire. I was in upper NH once camping out. I swear a bear was watching me. It was pretty scary.

Something was watching. Do you ever feel like you are being watched? Halloween is coming! Time for some more stories about UFO’s!  Yikes.

The James River As Evening Falls/ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Day, like a weary pilgrim, had reached the western gate of heaven, and Evening stooped down to unloose the latchets of his sandal shoon.  ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Hyperion

I went down to the river late last week just before dark and took some photos.  Nothing spectacular was happening. But that’s good because it helps me become a better photographer.  I need to squeeze a photo out of the environment in order to progress.

And so we have these photos.  How would you grade them?  I like the way the water looks.  It almost looks like “noise” but it’s not.  It’s stuff on the river and the fading light is reflecting it up to the lens.

Today is a rainy day here in Virginia.  The dog is barking outside the window.  And my legs are starting to act up.  I probably should go outside and do something as the sun tries to make a late comeback.

I don’t know what I will decide to do.  But it’s nice to have options.  Even if you feel unmotivated to do anything.
